Tonnenheider Hochzeitsmühle

Built in 1878, the gallery Dutchman is striking with its plastered stone eight-aisle on a two-story, also octagonal substructure. Windy wings, a gallery and the "Stert", which has been common from time immemorial, make this mill, which is visible from afar, a sought-after photo object. In 1913, a hurricane-like storm brought the mill to a standstill. The conversion to motor power paid off by 1938, but a defect in the suction gas motor was not repaired, and thus the milling operation was discontinued. Around 1975, the mill, which had become an eyesore, was considered for demolition. However, this project was not realized. With the beginning of mill preservation in the district of Minden-Lübbecke, the Tonnenheider Heimat- und Mühlenfreunde (friends of local history and mills) also vehemently campaigned for the preservation of the mill. After a long period of time, the voluntary help of local residents, a job creation scheme and subsidies, especially from the state, succeeded in restoring the mill to its windmill-era appearance - a stroke of luck for Tonnenheide's current landmark. Since 1996, many couples from all over the Federal Republic of Germany have said "I do" here, far from the sober charm of a normal registry office.
