Rahden

St. Johannis-Kirche im Zentrum

St. Johannis church is located in the center of Rahden. The newly designed church square with its fountain and the green cloister invite you to linger. The church was founded in 1353. The church on Rahden's Sandbrinke, a large, stately building for its time, was extended by a substantial third to the north by an annex in 1660. The oldest parts of the tower, which was rebuilt by Bishop Hermann in 1591, the mighty foundation walls, the old stone spiral staircase and the narrow, embrasure-like openings date from the time before the extension.

In the last third of the 18th century, the roof of the annex from 1660 had become dilapidated, and so it was decided to carry out another fundamental reconstruction. Only the perimeter walls of the old church and the annex remained. In the fall of 1790, the church was consecrated, after services had been celebrated between the walls of the church during the construction period, and people sat on chairs they had brought with them or broken materials.

Today, St. John's Church forms a central point in Rahden and is the focal point of the shopping streets. In summer, the adjacent ice cream parlor invites you to relax and refresh yourself.
