One of the oldest nature reserves in the Minden-Lübbecke district is the Schnakenpohl in Rahden.

The heath pond "Schnakenpohl" is a naturally formed water body in a heath sand area. Such rather nutrient-poor waters with near-natural water plant and bank vegetation are rare throughout Germany and therefore the "Schnakenpohl" was included in the European protected area system "Natura 2000".
The "Schnakenpohl" occupies a very special position among the now 62 nature reserves. First designated as a protected area in 1936, it is the oldest nature reserve in the district. In addition, as a "Heideweiherbiotop" it represents a naturally very rare habitat throughout Germany.
